What I am reflecting?
What Would It Look Like If This Were Fun?
It has been a while since my son started trying to ride a bicycle.
When he first started, he had a small yellow bicycle. Of course, it had four wheels, two big wheels and two smaller wheels at the back.
He rode the bicycle a few times, and I could sense that he was having fun and enjoying the process.
But as a father, sometimes I wonder if he might be a little too excited about it. He would come back from school and say that he wanted to cycle around. And sometimes, I would feel a bit afraid because, you know, he might be cycling a little dangerously or falling down.
After a while, he started riding a red bicycle, also with four wheels.
At first, he wasn’t very fast. But eventually, he started picking up speed, getting faster and faster as he rode.
And every time he rode the bicycle, I could see the smile on his face. I could see the excitement.
Then, one of the magical things happened this week.
He requested that I remove the two small wheels from the back of the bicycle.
And he was so happy when he realized that he could actually balance himself and stay upright on the bicycle without any assistance.
He was amazed by his own achievement.
He was so excited about it.
This story about biking gave me a thought.
One is that when it comes to learning a skill, as long as you choose to pursue it, sooner or later, you are going to achieve it.
The second one is to have faith and continuously work on it. One day, you’re going to achieve it.
But what goes beyond these two is this:
Have fun. Enjoy the process.
No matter how many times you fall.
No matter how many times you have to learn to stand up again.
No matter how far you feel you are from achieving what you want.
Remember that as long as you are having fun, you are being transformed.
The skill you are trying to acquire and the outcome you want will eventually come to you, easily and effortlessly.
And I think that is a good reminder for all of us.
I also want to congratulate my son for this breakthrough and achievement.
I hope that, someday when he grows up, he will remember this moment.
The moment when he first realized:
“I can do it by myself.”
Quote I’m pondering
“You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation.” – Plato
Affirmation I used
I pursue my goals with joy, and joy is how they come to me.
