What I am reflecting?
Every day in life, you have choices to make.
Last month, the tile in my study room broke. At the time, I felt sad and worried. It was because fixing it would mean unnecessary spending, and on the other hand, it might be dangerous for the kids to use the room.
I did what needed to be done—asked around for advice and consulted a professional on what could be done.
I made an appointment with the contractor, and the work only started this week. I decided to do a partial repair, fixing only the parts that were impacted.
In addition to that, I also took the opportunity to paint the room, since I had already moved out all the furniture and cleared my photo wall collage. Might as well repaint after many years of staying in this house.
Since I decided to repaint, I also chose to beautify the damaged wall. I decided to skim coat the wall before painting it, which will be done either at the end of this week or next week.
The reflection that struck me is this: many years ago, I didn’t know how to skim coat or paint. At first, it was difficult. Now, it’s still taxing (because of the hard labour), but not as difficult anymore after learning some tricks and getting the right tools.
The thought that came to me this week is that sometimes, in conversations with people, when they face challenges or tasks they have never done before, they will say: I don’t know how to do it.
One year later, if you ask them again, the answer is still the same: I don’t know how to do it.
It is not that they don’t know—it’s that they choose not to.
It might be a curse that I choose to do a lot of things myself, because it feels cheaper (arguably) or faster. It is part of my bring up as my dad taught me to be handy and many DIY. I take it as a super power to be flexible with the power to learn what I’ve not yet able to.
Remember, it’s okay if you don’t know. But if that thing is important to you, and you keep saying I don’t know, then that’s your choice.
Always remember—you have the right to choose.
